One little trick I found that goes against all steelhead fishing logic is that sometimes, but not always, when fishing an egg sack on the bottom without a float, I seem to get more hits and hookups when I let LOTS of slack into the line as it bounces along the bottom instead of keeping a modestly tight line. In most of these hookups, I don't even feel the slightest hit; I just tighten up and I've got a fish! This seems to work best in shallow slow moving water where the fish are spooky. Lots of times, I've caught fish using this technique when others around me were'nt getting anything.
